Zonta International is a classified, world wide service organisation of executives in business and the professions, working together to advance the status of women through service and advocacy.
- To provide service at the global and local level.- To improve the legal, political, economic, health, educational and professional status of women.
- To work for the advancement of understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of executives in business and the professions.
- To promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedom.
- To be united internationally to foster high ethical standards, to implement service programs and to provide mutual support and fellowship for members who serve their community, their nations and the world.
The Zonta logo is made up of symbols adapted from the Sioux Indian language with meanings such as 'banding together for a purpose' and 'honest and trustworthy'. These are superimposed on what appears to be the letter 'z', the Sioux symbol for 'inspiration'
Zonta international was founded in 1919 in Buffalo New York State Now
it has its office in Chicago with an Executive Director and staff. The
International President and International Foundation support
international service projects and educational fellowships. Zonta is
divided into Districts with a District Governor and District Board.
These in turn are composed of Areas, with each Area having an Area
Director. District 23 covers Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia,
Northern Territory and Western Australia with over 40 clubs and
approximately 850 members.
The objects of Zonta International allow a wide range of interests among members to be accommodated. Some may choose to seek out potential members or prepare appropriate submissions to government bodies with regard to proposed legislation affecting women. Others may establish and maintain contact with local and international clubs or organise the club's program or fellowship events. Yet others become involved in raising awareness of Zonta projects and awards or in mentoring potential candidates. All this is available for members to develop their knowledge of, and capacity to promote interest in women's affairs.
